Right now I’m editing. Thought I’d share some knowledge, since I often get asked about production/producing/editing/etc.
This is what we use to record audio: Zoom H4N. Runs for about $300.
It’s great. True Stereo mic (no time lag). Records 4 channels. Records to SD. Up to 96kHz/24bit wav recording as well as mp3 recording for smaller files. Speed control playback. XLR input. Time stamping. USB 2.0.
Great for field work, indie productions, and guerilla-style filmmaking. Sturdy, portable and has never let us down. The sound we get is pretty great.

Blip.tv Develops Pre-roll That Offers Free Downloads on Other Devices

What if your pre-roll video ads were more than just repurposed-for-the-web-TV spots, the kind agencies have in spades? What if pre-roll could do more?
A group of developers at start-up Blip.tv, a purveyor of amateur and semi-pro web series, was wondering that recently, while pondering the best way to help Wieden & Kennedy let gamers see — or better yet, play — a demo of its client Electronic Arts’ NCAA Football 11.
The developers thought, what if you could get the game downloaded to gaming consoles remotely via a pre-roll ad? Engineers set to work on the problem and developed a unit that allows users to click-to-download a game demo to Xbox consoles.

New York-based Blip.tv takes no ownership interest in the shows it represents and doesn’t sign any of them to exclusive contracts. It is, essentially, an engineering company and a sales force that builds tools for show creators, and more recently, advertisers. Eleven of its 32 people on staff are programmers or developers. It raised $10.1 million in June and racks up about 100 million views on its collection of shows each month. Blip.tv’s top earners pull down $500,000 in ad revenue a year based on 50/50 revenue sharing.
I have never liked pre-rolls, but this is a seriously smart approach to the “ants in your pants - oh, to hell with this” syndrome pre-rolls often gives viewers. Geeks to rule! :)

Thing on My Desk Thursday
My desk is a bit of a mess right now, so while tidying up, I thought I’d share a “thing” that’s on my desk.
This is Steve’s Oscar the Grouch cup from when he was a little kid. He “loaned” it to me and now I use it as a pen holder. What thing is on your desk?

I fucking love this company.
If one more person uses this word or if I see it on one more agency RFP I am going to just lose it. It is an episode. It is a show. A “webisode” is not a thing.
Stop it. Just stop it.
Also, you can’t “make it go viral.” Next person who asks me to help them make their content go viral will get a smack.
Come on people.

The show is playing at The Pantages Theatre with original castmember (and creator!) Lin Manuel Miranda. Orchestra seats were 96 bucks so this is kind of a steal.
The play closes July 25.
I just saw this with Angela last night and I was a mess (we both were). By intermission, the journey from full belly laughs to embarrassingly silent sobs rendered me into exhaustion. Seeing a story that’s a reflection of my family and where I grew up was also pleasantly unnerving. From the elevated train running in front of my bedroom, to the local salon bochinche, to wanting desperately to fly away… though the details are specific, the story is exceptionally universal. We need more of these stories told! Seriously, catch it before it leaves town… Lin Manuel as Usnavi is amazing.
