Cindy Sherman reveals how dressing up in character began as a kind of performance and evolved into her earliest photographic series such as “Bus Riders” (1976), “Untitled Film Stills” (1977-1980), and the untitled rear screen projections (1980).

Steve Jobs at the 2010 Oscars (by Zadi Diaz)

I remember this moment clearly. People were swirling by in pre-Oscar excitement. Steve looked directly into my lens with a smirk and I quickly snapped the photo. I remember just hoping I didn’t mess up the only shot I would really care about. It was a complete geek-out.
Other photos of that day are here.

Dancers Among Us
A photo gallery by Jordan Matter. When was the last time you danced in public? If the answer is never, I challenge you to do it at least once in your lifetime. Break that non-existent rule. :)

Your Beautiful Pictures Are Stupid: Against Trendy Digital Photography

Just read this blog post and it got me riled up.
There is nothing I dislike more than creatives who get on their high horse and attempt to dictate the “right” way to be creative. Digital photography is here to stay. Go back to 1980 if you don’t like it.
The writer props up analog photography. While I like film photography, film and paper and processing is expensive. There are people who would have never had the opportunity to experiment, to learn and develop their creative eye if it wasn’t for the digital revolution. Are filters and camera apps overused? Sure, but so what?
I worked as a photo editor for many years and the pro photographers we’d hire would also add filters and manipulate their images. What’s the difference? We just see more of it now because more people have access. That is a *good* thing.
Now that the tech is taken care of, people can begin focusing on telling good stories. Personal stories. Stories that we’ve never seen or heard.
Experiment. Play. Go and be free. And don’t ever listen to those who tell you that you shouldn’t or that it’s stupid. Don’t *ever* let them stifle your expression or your growth. You never know where one digital photo will lead to an idea, that will lead to a whole new genre or art form.
Keep shooting.
